Shiny leafed wild coffee contains the alkaloid dimethyltryptamine which is hallucinogenic and may eventually prove to have medicinal applications. The seeds were once used as a coffee substitute. Its common name comes from the small, red fruit it produces. It also grows in the West Indies, parts of Mexico, Central America and in northern South America.
